Published: July 26, 2023

Samsung on Wednesday finally unveiled its much anticipated new generation of flip phones with the theme "Join the Flip Side."

At a star-studded Galaxy Unpacked event in Seoul, Korea, which was also livestreamed worldwide, the electronics giant introduced the Galaxy Z Fold5 and the Z Flip5.

“Samsung is revolutionizing the mobile industry with foldables by setting the standard and continually refining the experience,” said TM Roh, president and head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

“Every day, more people choose our foldables because they offer an experience people want that they can’t get on any other device. Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are the latest devices that prove our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers through innovative technology,” he told the audience, which included celebrities such as Korean rapper Suga and American actress Sydney Sweeney.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 - A Productivity Powerhouse

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 boasts a large screen experience and the most powerful processer in the Galaxy Z series, the company said.

The new offering is also the thinnest and lightest Fold yet, Samsung added.

With a 7.6 inch display and a max brightness of 1,750 nits, or 30% more than its predecessor, Samsung said that users would be able to enjoy a cinematic experience on the go and enjoy snappier game play, especially with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform.

The large screen also gives users the opportunity to optimize business solutions as the phone provides PC-like power in one's pocket.

"The improved Taskbar enables dynamic productivity by allowing users to quickly switch between frequently used apps," the company said. "Now, up to four recent apps are at the ready for more efficient working."

The S Pen Fold Edition, meanwhile, is now slimmer and more compact and has also been fine-tuned to deliver a superior writing experience on Galaxy Z Fold5.

Galaxy Z Flip 5: Bigger Screen and AI Improvements to Camera

The Galaxy Z Flip 5, meanwhile, is described as "personal, powerful, and pocketable."

The company said that the phone has the largest cover screen on a Galaxy at 3.4 inches to provide the best selfie experience as well as a Flex Cam, which allows users to select different aspect ratios and other settings straight from the cover screen.

In addition, users will also be able to capture videos with the screen, which boasts a Super Steady feature and the ability to shift from wide to ultra wide frames to keep groups in frame.

Closed, the Galaxy Z Flip5 offers more usability than before, the company noted. From the Flex Window, users will be able to view all their Widgets at a glance and switch between them instantly with a pinch of the screen to activate Multi Widget View.

Samsung has also added AI improvements to the phone's camera to bring every photo to life.

"The AI-powered image signal processing algorithm corrects any visual noise that typically spoils low-light images while enhancing details and color tone," the company said.

The phone can also be controlled from one's Galaxy watch, allowing a user to snap photos, film videos, pause, and zoom, all from their wrist.

Both phones are equipped with a shock dispersion layer and a redesigned back for a more solid display and come with Armor Aluminum Frames to provide protection consumers expect.

In addition, both phones feature a wider variety of recycled materials than previous generations.

Both phones will be available on August 11 with the Z Fold selling at $1,799 and the Flip 5 at $999.

The unveiling comes after Samsung launched a campaign encouraging the public to "Join the Flip Side" and teased that a new "cultural driver" was to be revealed at the Galaxy Unpacked event.
