Publicis Groupe has become the first major advertising company to join the Coalition of Content Provenance Authority (C2PA), an organization established in 2020 that promotes the responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence in marketing technology.

The widespread popularity of AI has advertising and marketing groups rushing to make the most of the innovative tech in their respective industries.

However, the ethical implications of AI in top creative agencies have not yet been fully explored.

Publicis Groupe’s move to join C2PA as a Steering Committee member puts it at the forefront of facing this challenge and positions it as an industry leader in certifying the sources of digital content and addressing misinformation online.

“In an industry where bold, thought-provoking content has the power to move people, tell stories, and demand action, we cannot afford the risk of bad actors compromising a creator’s authentic vision and creation,” said Publicis Groupe’s Chief Strategy Officer, Carla Serrano, in a public statement

Founding members of the coalition include industry giants Adobe and Microsoft, who are working to standardize and regulate the implementation of AI in the industry, in collaboration with policymakers, business leaders, and academics.

“The C2PA’s efforts help protect that invaluable IP and ensure authentic creative visions are brought to completion – and verified along the way. And people can feel confident knowing that the content they’re viewing is unique, original, and straight from the source,” added Serrano.

Publicis is not unfamiliar with AI, having experimented with the technology through an internal assistant known as Marcel for years. Now, by joining the C2PA, the advertising and public relations company appears to be sending a message that it is serious about choosing to focus its energy on protecting intellectual property and brand safety.
