Instagram Might Release AI Chatbot with 30 Personalities

It seems that Instagram is experimenting with the prospect of introducing social chatbots to the app.

The well-known leaker Alessandro Paluzzi shared a photograph on Twitter showing what seems to be a “Chat with an AI” feature on Instagram, stating “Bring AI to your chats for a more fun and engaging experience.”

The AI feature suggests three possible options: answering questions and giving advice, inspiring creativity, and the option to choose from 30 artificial intelligence personalities.

While Meta, which owns Instagram, has not yet publicly commented on the matter, the rumors would tie into Mark Zuckerberg’s statements from earlier this year referring to the company’s stance on AI developments.

Meta’s CEO stated that the company was looking into “developing AI personas that can help people in a variety of ways,” and that they aimed to make this feature available through text conversations.

Other companies, such as Snapchat, have already launched versions of the social chatbot. Snapchat’s “My AI” chatbot launched in February and Microsoft made “Bing” available to everyone in May.

"Bing," in particular, was the subject of controversy for the inappropriate responses users would receive from the chat, raising questions around social chatbot safety and what could be done to regulate it.

When or if Instagram’s social AI feature will be released is still unknown, but rumors suggest that “Chat with an AI” could include more features and options than its competitors.
