Hogwarts Legacy, a new open-world video game based on the Harry Potter franchise, is set to be released on February 11 by Avalanche and Warner Bros

Despite the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, fans have eagerly been waiting for the game's release. In fact, Hogwarts Legacy has already broken records on Twitch for being the most-watched single-player game and is currently the No. 1 pre-sale game on the gaming platform Steam.

The surprise comes from the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling, as the Harry Potter creator has repeatedly made anti-trans comments. A few notable gamers have stated that they will be boycotting Hogwarts Legacy due to the controversy.

The game is set in the late 1800s—many years before the events in the Harry Potter books—and offers players the chance to create their own characters and explore the Harry Potter world beyond Hogwarts Castle.

The character cast features a trans character, which is a first for the Harry Potter franchise. Warner Bros. has stated that creating diverse characters was a high priority, and while. J.K. Rowling was not involved in the game's creation; she does stand to make some licensing royalties.

Despite this, gaming experts still anticipate a blockbuster release and have estimated that the game will easily sell 10 million copies. Commenters have said that the game could serve to re-brand the franchise.
