Apple's highly anticipated iOS 17 is here — an update the tech giant first unveiled during its WWDC event in June. The tech giant will introduce the update to users by offering new apps, as well as significant upgrades to Messages, FaceTime, and AirDrop.

iOS 17 Update Recap

This year's major iOS update includes a new Journal app similar to Notes. It lets users jot down their thoughts, create entries, and receive personalized suggestions based on their recent activities and photos — all with end-to-end encryption to ensure the user's security and privacy.

Meanwhile, FaceTime will get new voice and video notes that users can leave if the person they're trying to call is not available at a given time.

In Messages, users can enjoy new emoji stickers, as well as create Live Stickers that users can make from their existing photos. Other updates in Messages include:

  • Improved search filters
  • Catch-up arrow that directs to the last read message
  • Improved location sharing
  • Audio message transcription
  • Check-In feature

iOS 17 will also come with a new StandBy lock screen display for iPhones not in use, a new NameDrop feature that allows two contacts to share, listen, and watch content together as long as they're within close proximity, smarter Autocorrect, and small improvements to the Phone and Live Voicemail apps.

How to Install iOS 17

To install the latest software update, users can head to Settings > General > About > Software Update to download iOS 17.

iOS 17 will require 3.62GB of available storage in order to be installed, and will not be available for models earlier than the iPhone XS from 2018.

Netizens React to iOS 17

A much less spoken about feature in the latest iOS 17 update includes a variety of new ringtones that users can apply when receiving calls. Commenting on the feature, an influential X user took to social media to share the short tracks.

The tech giant is also notorious for cutting out old models from newer iOS updates, which is why select iPhone X users were pleased to find out their phones made the cut.

Another user shared his thoughts on the new StandBy mode featured in the update, which he considers to be iOS 17's best feature.
