Mark Thompson, the former CEO of The New York Times, has just been announced as the CEO and chairman of CNN Worldwide.

Thompson marks the replacement of former CEO Chris Licht three months after he departed from CNN following public criticism and several internal mishaps.

CNN's new CEO has a successful eight-year career behind him at The New York Times, where he helped bring the brand into the digital age and boost digital subscription numbers.

Thompson worked as a controller and general director at BBC from 2004 to 2012 before joining The New York Times.

"I couldn't be more excited about the chance to join CNN after years of watching it and competing against it with a mixture of admiration and envy," Thompson said.

In previous years, CNN has struggled to keep up with ratings, the growing popularity of streaming servicesand the company's revenue stream.

Following Licht's departure, CNN's interim leadership team consisting of Amy Entelis, Eric Sherling, David Leavy, and Virginia Moseley has managed to keep the company afloat and bring in new talent.

"Where others see disruption, I see opportunity. I can't wait to roll up my sleeves and work with my new colleagues to build a successful future for CNN," Thompson concluded.
