Google is currently testing a feature via Workspace Labs that lets users create AI-generated backgrounds in its video conferencing service, Meet – a feature first announced during the I/O 2023 event.

To enable the feature, users can open Meet, select a meeting, and click “Apply visual effects” at the bottom right corner of the screen where they will find the “Generate a background” option.

After entering a prompt, users can set styles for the background including sci-fi, fantasy, 3D animation, and more.

Meet will then give the user several options to choose from. “For example, you can ask Google Meet to create an illustration of a magical forest,” tech blogger Artem Russakovskii explained in a tweet.

While features such as Duet AI for Sheets and Slides have been widely available for all Workspace Labs members, AI-generated backgrounds are still “rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet,” as per Google’s support page

Creating backgrounds from prompts is just one of the many features Google plans to incorporate into its workspace apps.

During the I/O event, the tech giant also promised a new “Help Me Write” feature for Docs, “Immersive View for Routes” for Maps, a Magic Editor for Photos, and more.

The new tester feature also comes after Microsoft announced the price of its 365 Copilot AI business assistant, starting at $30 per user.
