TikTok recently introduced passkeys for iOS devices - an easier and more secure way for people to sign into their accounts across their iOS devices by using Face or Touch ID.

In a press release on Monday, TikTok confirmed it would begin rolling out passkeys for iOS in certain regions, starting with Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America beginning in July, and anticipate expanding over time. However, there's no word yet on when passkeys will be available in the U.S.

What Are Passkeys?

With passkeys, all biometric data used for authentication remains securely stored on the device and cannot be accessed by third-party apps.

TikTok users now have the choice to sign in directly from their iCloud account using passkeys instead of a traditional password. Passkey authentication utilizes public-private key cryptography techniques, where users verify their identity with Apple Face or Touch ID to initiate the key pairing process.

One of the key advantages of passkeys is that apps utilizing this authentication method cannot access or process any of the biometric data involved in the login process on iOS devices. This ensures that all biometric authentication data remains strictly on the users' devices, enhancing privacy and security.

Passkeys simplify the login process and significantly reduce the risk of account compromise since there is no longer a traditional password that can be stolen, forgotten, or used across multiple accounts. Additionally, passkeys are highly resistant to phishing attempts, further safeguarding user accounts.

TikTok Joins the FIDO Alliance

Aside from the passkeys launch, TikTok also announced its membership in the FIDO Alliance, a global industry organization dedicated to promoting authentication standards that reduce reliance on traditional passwords.

By entering the Alliance, TikTok joined the ranks of numerous tech leaders worldwide committed to diminishing our dependence on passwords. As a member, TikTok will actively contribute to the development of FIDO specifications, establish best practices for FIDO Authentication deployment, and raise global awareness about the Alliance's mission.

“Passwords are a hindrance to security and user experience that are long past their expiration date – which is why the FIDO Alliance has created open standards for passwordless authentication that are being utilized by leading service providers to allow consumers to have easier access to leading online services such as TikTok,” explained Andrew Shikiar, FIDO Alliance executive director.
